What’s Your First Marketing Piece?

By Maggie Dennison When youre about to open your doors for business and you need materials to promote it, where do you start? Brochure? Website? Direct marketing package? Postcards? One of my teachers, Master Copywriter Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero of Red Hot Copy, says the best place to start is to write a sales letter. Why? To produce an effective sales letter, you have analyze every aspect of your product or service. This means researching and scrutinizing your target market, getting inside their heads and figuring out what makes them tick, understanding the doubts that might stop them in their tracks and prevent them from hiring you or buying your product. It forces you to nail down every feature, benefit and advantage of your product or service. It means taking a detailed look at exactly what makes your product or service different from those of your competitors. It also makes you come up with the best ever call to action. Not to forget collecting well-crafted, stellar testimonials from your best clients. Not only that, but you do this all in great detail and depth. Now you may not use all the information in your letter, but you have to delve into all these aspects in order to cherry pick the parts that will create a persuasive message for you. The challenging part in writing a sales letter is that you cant sit down face to face with your prospect and answer questions as they pop into her mind and out of her mouth. Instead you have to anticipate every point that might come up in a personal meeting and answer those one by one in your letter. So an effective sales letter covers every point you need to make in order to move the reader to the next step in your sales process, without having the feedback you get when youre sitting across a table from them. Not an easy task. Thats why it’s such a great idea to get started by writing a long and detailed sales letter even if youre not planning to send it. Sure it takes time to gather all the details, analyze them and organize them in a way that flows persuasively through the sales process. But once youre done, you pretty much have all the information at your fingertips to put together any other piece of promotional material. It’s all there in one document. Then whether you want a brochure, website content, a presentation, a postcard or even a 30-second Round Robin or Elevator Speech, it’s ready in next to no time. How To Keep Your Fitness Program Simple - Part 1

By Andrew Gee The following article is one of a series of articles which focus on Self Improvement, Motivation and Empowerment. It is based on research done over twenty years as a personal and business coach. This self improvement article was written in response to questions which have been asked on losing weight and long term weight loss as well as address common challenges that people have with this subject. I sincerely hope that you find the following information of value. Keeping Your Fitness Program Simple - Stair Sprinting Anybody can lose weight; it’s no big deal. You only have to be careful about the food you eat and to make more effort than you usually do. Dieting doesn’t have to mean food deprivation and money spent on gym subscriptions. You can keep your body in shape with simple exercises that do not require gym equipment or professional advice and supervision. A simple exercise that anybody can perform at home or the park is called Stair Sprinting. The name is pretty self explanatory. All you have to do is run up and down the stairs between several floors; the more floors, the better off you’ll be. It’s a good idea to start small, even if you’re in a good physical condition. Run up and down four floors two times. First timers and overweight people are unlikely to manage more than two reps anyway. However, it’s no big deal if you can’t do more than two reps in the beginning. Resistance to effort is built in time. Do the two reps every other day for two weeks. After two weeks increase the number of reps to either three or four, depending on how you feel. If you can take four reps up and down four flights of stairs, then by all means do so. If you can’t, then stick to three reps. As the weeks go by, you can add even more reps to your routine in order to increase your endurance and to really put the muscles to work. This exercise is perfect for the legs and ass. Ladies and gents looking to build shapely asses and strong thighs ought to try stair sprinting. Having to carry your own weight up the stairs instead of flat terrain puts more stress on the muscles and helps the feet gain more endurance. However, be very careful when doing this exercise. Running up and down the stairs makes it very easy to trip or miss a step and splay an ankle. Even more serious injuries might happen if you’re not careful enough. ========SIDEBAR======== When it comes to the subject of self improvement, I fully understand (through my own experiences) that it is a lot easier said than done. However, you are here, right now, because you have a desire to improve your self or you are at least interested in this subject. Perhaps you are reading this to help a friend or colleague - great. If this article helps you or you help a friend, paying it forward is what lif’e all about so we all win. ======END SIDEBAR====== Keeping Your Fitness Program Simple - Squat Thrusts Everybody understands push ups and sit-ups. They’re simple, straightforward exercises. But to get a shapely and fit looking body you need to get beyond the simpler exercises and put more muscles to work. Dieting can only take you half way through to your goal. The rest has to come from exercises that burn out fat and build stronger muscles. So, one good exercise that can be easily performed at home by anyone is the squat thrusts. In order to perform squat thrusts, you have to put your hands on the floor, shoulder width apart, with the legs stretched, just like in the normal push up position. From this position, you must bring both legs forward, underneath your torso, by bending the knees and thrusting forward. The third step is to return your legs to the original position with the same quick, powerful movements. The exercise can be performed by bringing the right leg forward, in a position that resembles that of a runner at the start line. Then, thrust both legs simultaneously, the right leg going back and the left leg coming forward to replace the right one. And thrust again, bringing the right leg forward and pushing the left leg back. This exercise is meant to work out the glutes, the hamstrings and the quads, with some benefits for the triceps. Be careful not to trip and fall and make sure your hands are firmly keeping the whole body in the correct position. Perform some 15-20 reps every workout session and you’ll be showing some great legs to anyone who cares to look. Ladies are impressed by men with muscular legs and asses and you don’t need me to tell you how men feel about women with good-looking legs!!! Remember that exercises must be helped by keeping a close eye on the food intake. Junk food, sodas and snacks have to go and fruits, vegetables and other nutritional and healthy foods must take their place. NOW is the time! O.K. you have read the article. Now is the time for action. Without action, this article adds no value whatsoever to your self improvement. But remember, without action, you cannot blame this self improvement article or any article for that matter. So, take action NOW. Even if only one piece of advice, one piece of information, one tip makes a difference, then the whole article has been worth it for all of us. NOW is the time! Online Dating Question - I’m a Good Catch! Are All the Women in My Area Stupid?

By Jennifer L. Hunt The Question “I need someone to help me try to stand out. There is no one around here that can help me. That or the women in my area are stupid, because I AM A CATCH!” - Phil in Illinois The Honest Answer We’ll respond to the last part of Phil’s question first and then tell you a few quick tips to really make your online profile stand out from all the other guys on any dating site. Part 1: “That or the women in my area are stupid, because I AM A CATCH!” When you’re trying to appeal to another person , i.e. to attract that really cute girl, take a look at yourself from her perspective, and figure out what would be attractive and what is important to her. Take the time to write down all of your best qualities “from her perspective”. At that point it’s about her, not about you. Maybe you’re coming across as a little too strong (read: arrogant). Many women like subtle confidence but not arrogance. You need to be sure of yourself without offending her. Focus on your best qualities in your headline and online profile details. Also - and this is VERY important - remember that every person is a unique individual, with distinct preferences and tastes. What is a “great catch” to one person could be a turn off to another person, and vice versa. Be careful of assuming that other people perceive things the same way you do - that’s rarely the case and will often get you into trouble, especially with women. Part 2: “I need someone to help me try to stand out” Here are some simple things that you can do to REALLY stand out among all of the other men on any dating site. Upload a Quality Photo We will continue to hammer on this one until every guy out there gets it! Most men do not upload their photo and the fact is that profiles with photos get 10 times more looks than those without. And get this, profiles with QUALITY photos get 4 times more looks than profiles with poor photos. The key word here is QUALITY PHOTO. That’s where most men who do upload a photo really mess up. They upload a poor grainy photo, or worse yet, they upload a photo with their ex-girlfriend scribbled out. If you don’t like your photo, have a professional one made. There are many professional photo services that do nothing but create great photos for your online dating profile. This is the single biggest thing you can do to stand out! Write a Catchy Headline When it comes to writing an online profile, it is easy to make the mistake of not paying enough attention to your headline. Most people will click on a profile with a catchy headline just to see what the person has to say next. The whole purpose of your headline is to get the other person to want to know more about you. Your headline should be something special about you, but still make them curious. You’re trying to get them to want to read more of your profile, so it helps to either ask a question that the reader might think will be answered in the profile, or try and establish a sense of mystery. Have a well -written, intriguing profile Writing about your self in paragraph form can be a very daunting task. What do I say? Where do I begin? Why are they making me do this? First, take a deep breath and relax. Taking the time to write a good profile will attract more compatible women to your profile and save you a lot of wasted time and energy in the end. There are some basic and simple rules that can make the process much easier. Be yourself. Honesty is the Best Policy . Even though it may be tempting to fudge a little bit on your weight, your age, or your marital status, the best way to ensure that you will find the person that you are looking for is to BE HONEST! Write like you speak. Be yourself. Sure, you’re trying to put your best foot forward, but you’re also trying to find someone who likes you for who you really are. Target your market. Don’t talk “leather and whips” when your looking for true romance at eHarmony and in the same respect, don’t use words like “true love” when you are looking for a one-night stand at AdultFriendFinder. Be specific. Avoid generalities. Use concrete examples from your life. Instead of saying “I like football,” you can say “I like watching the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night at my favorite sports bar. You can see how that says so much more about you. What things are most important to you in life? Is it health, career, family, fun, learning, religion, or personal development? The things you choose to prioritize say a lot about who you are; including them in your profile will attract the right type of woman to you and lead others away. Don’t forget to spell check. Nothing is worse than reading a profile that starts with “maybe your the one for me” or something worse. (In case you didn’t catch that it should be ” you’re” instead of “your”.) Sure, we’re not all perfect, but that squiggly red line under half of your text is there for a reason. Telling the Hard Truth

By Linda Dessau Watching televisions sitcoms, I cant help but notice that most of the plots revolve around the same theme someone being afraid to tell someone else the truth. We saw it in the years that Ross loved Rachel, that Niles loved Daphne, or that George hated Susan. We saw it in virtually every episode of Threes Company. Why do we keep the truth from people? Usually its for one of the following reasons (or a combination): we dont want to hurt someones feelings, were afraid the other person will be angry with us or we dont want to be embarrassed. What are the main consequences of not speaking up and telling the hard truth? It keeps us stuck in unfulfilling situations like jobs, relationships and other life circumstances. Here are some others: ~ Someone thinks you understand something you dont ~ Someone thinks youve agreed with something you havent ~ Someone thinks youre going to do something and youre not ~ Someone thinks you did something and you didnt ~ Someone doesnt know you love them and you do ~ Someone thinks you love them and you dont ~ Someone doesnt know what youre capable of ~ Someone thinks youre capable of something youre not How do you know when its time to tell the hard truth? From that first nagging feeling in your stomach that something about the situation is not right. Because theres no bad time to tell the hard truth. 5 ways that telling the hard truth is good for your self-care: 1. You deepen your relationships. Social support is a very important element of self-care. When you assume someone can handle hearing the hard truth, they usually rise to your expectations. When you learn to tell the hard truth in a relationship you can be yourself in that relationship. 2. You lose the stress. Hiding the truth and/or living a lie is very stressful! Telling the hard truth is the antidote. 3. You feel better about yourself. When youve done something courageous like telling someone the hard truth, youre sending yourself the message that maybe you can do OTHER hard things. 4. You create evidence that your own thoughts make you suffer look at an experience where you told the hard truth and notice that it was the anticipation of telling that created your worry and stress. Things that hadnt happened and may never happen, things you were creating in your own mind. And the reality rarely lives up to our feared expectations. 5. You can learn from the hard truth. Has someone told you a hard truth? Use it as a way of deepening your relationship or to improve something about the situation or yourself. Thank the person and recognize their courage for telling the hard truth. Who do you need to tell a hard truth? What hard truths have you been avoiding telling yourself? Aromatherapy Massage and Massage: Effectiveness on Emotional and Physical Wellbeing

By CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd It has been well established that stress is one of the leading factors of chemical changes in the body. Persons who suffer from high anxiety are more prone to depression, disrupted sleep, heart disease and a kaleidoscope of other health disorders. In the case of those persons suffering from a plethora of health conditions, aromatherapy massage and massage have been shown to alleviate stress and anxiety. While these natural healing techniques may not always cure disease, they can have a remarkable effect on the physical body. What many individuals do not realize is that stress is the leading proponent in raising blood sugar levels and blood pressure, red blood cell over activity, constricted blood vessels, racing pulse, and digestive problems.[4] These facts prove that stress can have a very negative impact on overall health. In a report by the Research Institute of Nursing Science (College of Nursing Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea)[1], aromatherapy massage was studied on elderly women in Korea to determine its efficacy on anxiety and self-esteem issues. In the study, aromatherapy massage was administered using aromatic essential oils, such as chamomile, lavender, lemon and rosemary. Overall, the study lasted seven (7) weeks in duration. During that time frame, aromatherapy massage sessions were set three (3) times per week, with each session being 20 minutes. After the initial three-week period, a one-week intermission ensued, and then continued the remaining three weeks. While blood pressure and pulse rate were not significantly affected, remarkable differences were clearly established in regard to anxiety and self-esteem. In another study, aromatherapy massage was administered to older patients suffering from constipation. In the 10-day study, the experimental group was given abdominal aromatherapy massage; using the essential oils lemon, peppermint and rosemary. The control group, too, was given massage; but without the aid of aromatherapy. Upon commencement of the study, levels of constipation were measured by the constipation assessment scale (CAS). While the results found that the average number of bowel movements had improved in both groups (being treated with both aromatherapy massage and placebo massage); the experimental group who had received the aromatherapy massage showed a significant improvement. Purportedly, the aromatherapy massage demonstrated that its effects lasted for two (2) weeks after treatment; whereas non-aromatherapy massage lasted approximately seven to ten days (7-10). In conclusion, the study found that aromatherapy, coupled with massage does help ease geriatric constipation.[2] Other research suggests that both aromatherapy massage and massage are beneficial to persons suffering from cancer. In a study performed by Princess Alice Hospice in the UK, patients were administered both aromatherapy massage and massage alone during a four-week course. To assess its efficacy on physical and psychological symptoms, both techniques were randomly administered to patients with advanced stages of cancer. The findings were promising, as significant sleep patterns were enhanced in both the aromatherapy massage group and the massage-alone group. In addition, depression levels were statistically significant in the massage group. Overall, the study showed that patients who had heightened levels of distress were more likely to respond to both aromatherapy massage and massage alone.[3] In conclusion, we have learned that stress-related disorders and health complications can be significantly reduced and/or alleviated by natural healing techniques such as aromatherapy massage, massage and other noninvasive health treatments. 2007 All Rights Reserved - Aromatherapy Massage and Massage: Effectiveness on Emotional and Physical Wellbeing by CarolAnn Bailey-Lloyd References:Effects of aromatherapy massage on anxiety and self-esteem in Korean elderly women: a pilot study. - Int J Neurosci. 2006 Dec; 116(12):1447-55.Effect of aromatherapy massage for the relief of constipation in the elderly - Taehan Kanho Hakhoe Chi. 2005 Feb;35(1):56-64A randomized controlled trial of aromatherapy massage in a hospice setting. - Palliat Med. 2004 Mar;18(2):87-92Chronic Stress Affects both Mind and Body: The Health Effects of Stress and Increased Cortisol (http://www.stress-and-health.com/) Disclaimer: This article is intended for informational purposes only, and is not intended to replace the medical advice of your doctor or health care provider. How to Fight Fairly in Marriage

By George Wood One of the most important skills you need learn to keep your marriage healthy and strong is fighting fairly. Fighting can happen in all marriages, not only in bad marriages. Researchers estimate that 25% are happy, 50% will never be happy without therapy. 30% of marriages are considered to be empty and having only a little love or joy. 25% of marriages could really be happy if they would communicate better and if they learned how to resolve conflict. This latter of 25% is the one that should be focused on. The difference between a bad fight or a bad marriage and a bad fight or a good marriage is learning to fight fair. You can have an overall good marriage even you have a bad fight. Actually, couples who fight in a productive way and end the fight right, report more marital satisfaction. In two words, fight fairly is what separates the couples who fight and make up from the ones who fight and dont. As it follows, seven tips for fighting fairly in a marriage are presented: 1. Fair fighting involves focusing on the behavior not the person. 2. Direct requests are also used in a fair fighting couple. They ask if they want their partner to behave differently. This way the whole idea would be exposed clearly. For example, instead of saying I need you to change you can say Please place your dishes in the sink from now on. 3. If you want a fair fight, limit your focus in arguments. Instead of kitchen sinking an argument (meaning when a person is complaining about everything at the same time, and throw in the kitchen sink for good measure) you can focus on one issue at a time. 4. Healthy respect and good nonverbal communication are maintained by fair fighting couples. A well known marital researcher at the University of Washington, John Gottman, has highlighted the importance of good nonverbal marital communication, and has identified four behaviors leading to relationship distress. Contempt is one of these behaviors. Non-verbal contempt (eye-rolling, avoiding eye-contact, shaking their heads) can be a cause for relationship distress if this shows up in a couple. 5. The end of a fight is allowed by fair fighting couples. Letting the fight be over when it is done with it, is one important element of fighting fairly. This way is easier to forgive if not to forget. Just to prove a point, they do not bring up old issues again and again. This way the couples take the chance to make up and reconnect at the first opportunity. 6. It is recommended that in a fair fight, couples discuss issues sooner rather than later, because it is easier to talk about a small issue, before it becomes too big and overwhelming or leads to extreme resentment. 7. The couples, in a fair fight should focus on winning in the relationship not on winning the fight for them just to prove theyre right. They must remember that they are allies rather than enemies, and they must remember that they are on the same team and working on the same goals. Instead of focusing on their personal ego, they should rather focus on keeping the relationship as their main focus. The skill of fair fighting can be learned. It is likely that fewer marriages would end in divorce if more people learned to do it. It is a true fact that all marriages will have fights, but it matters how you handle each fight, and this will determine whether your marriage is a happy or unhappy one. Eliminate Your Competitors With 2 Simple Steps

By Debbie LaChusa In business, having competitors goes with the territory. Theres almost always someone selling the same product or service you are selling, or at least trying to solve the same customer problem you solve. Not only can competitors out-market you and steal your valuable prospects and customers, they can put you out of business if youre not careful. Trying to fight back by out-marketing your competitors can not only get expensive, it can be frustrating. But there is another solution. Eliminating your competitors is the easiest way to increase your chances of business success. And it isnt that hard when you know what youre doing. And, before you worry that Im advocating violence, relax. I dont mean literally eliminate them, in the sense of doing something bad to them. When I say eliminate, I mean … take them out of your prospects consideration set for your product or service category. Make it so your prospects ONLY think of your business, product or service when they are contemplating making a purchase. That way you get their business, instead of your competition making the sale. What this means is if you sell widgets, you want your prospects to only think of your widgets when they are thinking of buying widgets. This is pretty easy to do if your business is not in a competitive industry. But lets suppose there are all kinds of businesses selling what you are selling, or filling the same consumer or business need you are filling. How can you make sure your prospects ONLY think of you and therefore only BUY from you and not all those other companies? Answer: By thoroughly understanding those competing businesses and then doing one of two things: (1) Finding a position in the category you can own. This will separate you from all the other businesses and will make you uniquely qualified in the eyes of your prospect to fill their need. This usually requires finding a specific market niche you can focus on, or finding a specific product or service attribute or benefit, that is of value to your prospects, that none of your competitors can claim or are currently promoting. This puts you in a class of your own and virtually eliminates the competition. No one does exactly what you do. Or in the quite the way you do it. (2) By turning your competitors into co-opitors. What the heck is a co-opitor? It is a competitor that you turn into a partner or a cooperator. Are there businesses or individuals with whom you could partner, with the idea of referring business to each other? For example, a wellness coach could partner with a weight watchers clinic or a health club or a massage therapist. All of these practitioners are selling improved health and well being, but they can also be positioned as complementary services. And they could easily refer business to each other as an added value or service to their customers. Or, lets say you are a web site designer and you decide to focus primarily on working with small businesses (a market niche). You could create a partnership with another web site designer who has decided to focus on large corporations. If you both agree to only take on business that fits your identified niche, and to refer business outside your niche to the partner, you both win. You can partner with other businesses in your exact business in this manner, by identifying niches, by geographic area served, or by size or type of clients served. And you can partner with businesses in different categories that fill a similar customer need by agreeing to work together to help each other get customers. There is not a business out there that cannot effectively use one of these two strategies to significantly reduce their competition. So figure out which strategy fits your business best, and make it a priority to eliminate your competition this year. 2005 Debbie LaChusa Debbie LaChusa created The 10stepmarketing System to make marketing your own business as simple as answering 10 questions. Weight Loss - Surgical Intervention - Is it Right for You?

By Waller Jamison When considering weight loss surgical intervention may seem like a magical answer to your problem, but it should not be undertaken lightly and only if other methods have not been successful You may be considering weight loss surgery if you have been fighting a losing battle with your weight for years. Perhaps have recently read about success stories or watched TV shows tracking the progress of those who have had weightloss surgery and are wondering if this approach would work for you. As obesity increases at an alarming rate and with it the need for weight loss, surgical intervention is becoming more common, although it is usually the last resort, used only when other methods have failed. Surgical procedures have become safer with advances in technology and more highly trained medical staff. However, no surgical operation is without risk and in fact, the risk is much greater when the patient is overweight. Although many people succeed in losing weight afterwards and are able to adjust their eating patterns to take into account a smaller stomach, there are also those who do not. It is therefore extremely important for each patient to look at his or her lifestyle and state of health before deciding if surgery is the right choice. It is also important to discuss all the details with an experienced surgeon in order to get a clear picture of the pros and cons of weight loss surgery. In addition, it is important to discuss the consequences of surgery with a psychologist and dietician, as it is not always easy to adapt to the changes which are necessary if success is to be achieved on a long-term basis. Success after weightloss surgery is generally attributed to those who manage to lose 50% or more of their extra body weight and to keep it off for at least 5 years. However, there are many variables to consider, such as patient motivation, support network and aftercare. Weight loss usually occurs very quickly after surgery and continues rapidly for around 18 months to 2 years. At the same time, health problems directly related to obesity are likely to improve. Lap band surgery is the most popular and least invasive form of weight loss surgical intervention available. It restricts the amount that a person can eat and also slows down digestion and diminishes appetite. It also has the advantage of being adjustable, so that more or less food can be eaten and it is also a reversible procedure. Side effects and complications are not common, but should nonetheless be discussed with your doctor. Any form of surgery carries risks and don’t forget that obesity itself is a risk factor. Just because it is more readily available and more talked about these days, weight loss surgery is not a magic solution to obesity and should only be considered after a careful analysis of the alternatives and the possible consequences. If you have struggled for years with weight loss, surgical intervention may be recommended by your doctor but make sure you understand all the implications.
