Teamwork in Ministry: Paul’s Sense of Partnership in the Gospel

By Steve Singleton In the pursuit of his Christian ministry, the Apostle Paul had a keen sense of teamwork, teamwork with God and with his brothers and sisters. This awareness he expresses by using compound Greek words that begin with the prepositional prefix, sun-. With an object in the dative case, sun means “together” or “with.” This same prepositional prefix has carried over into English, occurring in such words as “symbiotic,” “symphony,” “synergy” (the Greek sun-, represented by sym- or syn-). What follows is a brief survey of the words Paul employed to express this sharing of ministry. You will discover that such sharing continues among 21st-century Christians. Paul calls us “co-citizens” and “joint heirs” and says we will “co-reign.” Because we are bound up with Christ, we share in His city, His inheritance, and His rule. But we also share the expectation of these future blessings with each other. Because of this, we “co-rejoice.” Meanwhile, the struggle continues, and we “suffer together.” To endure such suffering, we “co-console” each other, and we live and die together. But through it all, we are “co-workers.” Paul says that he and his associates are “God’s coworkers,” an amazing testimony both to the condescension of God–willing to stoop so low to work with the likes of us–and the corresponding elevation of Christians. Paul’s letters yield for us an amazing number of men and women that Paul calls his “co-workers”: Timothy, “everyone,” the Corinthian Christians, Titus, Priscilla and Aquila, Urbanus, Epaphroditus, Clement and others, Mark and Aristarchus, Jesus Justus, Philemon, Demas and Luke. One brother Paul calls “my yoke-fellow,” a term synonymous with coworker (though it could be the man’s name). Others Paul describes as if they are team members with him in an athletic competition–contending, striving, or struggling together. Two brothers Paul calls his “co-slaves.” Two he names as his “co-soldiers.” Because Paul considers himself a worker, a slave, a soldier, and an athlete for Christ, those who share the load with him also share these descriptions. This includes those of us who are laboring in the kingdom in modern times. As a frequent prisoner for Christ, Paul appreciated those who ministered to him in prison, even if they themselves were free to come and go. Four he describes as “co-prisoners.” It could be that at least some of these voluntarily served Paul so constantly that their imprisonment was self-imposed. All of these first-century Christians, as well as Christians alive today, are “partakers” or “partners” in the work of the kingdom. We share, have fellowship with, participate with, and keep company with other believers. Paul uses several compound terms to describe Christian unity. He says we must be united, of one accord, literally, “co-souls.” We are “conformed together” and “fitted together.” We cooperate and assist one another. We are “built together” and made “co-members of the same body.” All of this togetherness, we must remember, is not a natural state–far from it! If left to ourselves, we human beings split apart at every seam, whether it is race, ethnicity, gender, or class. It is only Christ that binds us together. Only in Him can it be possible to say that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, neither barbarian or Scythian, male or female; all are one in Christ Jesus (Gal. 3:28; 1 Cor. 12:13; Col. 3:11). Paul expresses the Christian’s union with Christ using the prepositional phrase, together with Christ. He reinforces this by employing compound verbs in which sun- is added to the beginning of the verb. This occurs in several of the key passages in Paul’s writings. In Gal. 2:20, Paul uses “co-crucified” to describe how becoming united with Christ’s death changes the believer. Compare Matt. 27:44, Mark 15:32, and John 19:32, where the same verb describes the literal crucifixion of the thieves who died with Jesus. Paul says that as a result of his union with Christ’s death, he has died to the law, in order to live to God (v. 19). In the next verse he adds that he is no longer the one living, but Christ is living in him. True, he still lives “in flesh,” but it is a life of trusting in the Son of God, who loved him and gave himself up in his behalf. Note that this happens for the individual, not just for believers as a group. Christ died, not for humanity, but for you and me and everyone else as individuals, and only as individuals can we respond to Him. This concept of “co-crucified” recurs in Rom. 6:6. Paul says, “Having known this, that the old man was co-crucified.” Although Christ goes unmentioned, the connection is definitely between the believer and ChristHe was the one crucified. The consequence of this death of the old man is a burial, for Paul earlier says, we were buried together with Him” through baptism into death (v. 4). As a result of this union with Christ’s crucifixion and his burial, we also share in the new life of His resurrection: “we believe that also we will live with him” (suzēsomen, v. 8). Paul uses these same verbs in the parallel passage in Colossians (co-buried and co-raised, 2:12; co-made alive, 2:13; see also 3:1). Because we belong to Christ, we belong to each other. Our union with Him unites us with every other person who is also united with Him in a grand and eternal fellowship. * * * Copyright 2006 Steve Singleton Steve Singleton has written and edited several books and numerous articles. 12 Tips to Buying at Auction - How To Get the Best Deal

By Martin Swinton Auctions can be great fun to attend. You can get in on the bidding or just watch the action. But, before you start bidding, make sure you know how to get the best buy. Keep these tips in mind at your next auction. 1. Start By Observing One of the best ways to learn is by observation. Attend a couple of auctions with the intention to simply watch and learn. Youll get the feel for how things work and be prepared to avoid costly mistakes. 2. Attend the Preview The preview can be held a few days before the auction or just a few hours before the auction begins. It is open to the public and free of charge. This is your chance to look items over thoroughly and to get up close to see any damage or problems with an item. 3. Be Prepared Know what you are looking at. Heres where reference books and price guides and the internet come in handy. Doing the legwork before hand, increases the likelihood that you will pay a fair price at auction. Not doing so, can lead to disaster. 4. Learn the Terminology There are a few terms that you need to understand so that you get the best buy at an auction. Pre-sale estimate The auction house bases this price on their past experience. It the price they expect the item to sell for. Provenance It is the history of the piece detailing past owners. This information is not always available, but it can be a juicy tidbit depending on the owner. Start Price This is the price at which the auction will begin. Reserve Price This is a pre-set amount that the seller has agreed is the lowest amount he/she will accept. Not all items will have a reserve. Keep in mind items with no reserve will sell even if there is only one bid at the start price. When bidding on items with no reserve, if you win, you pay. On the other hand, items with a reserve will only sell if the reserve price has been met. Youll find out if the reserve has been met, after the bidding is completed. The reserve price is not disclosed at the close of bidding. As-Is Just as it sounds, as-is means the items is selling in the condition that is currently in. It likely means that the item is a fixer-upper or needs work in some way. Hammer Price This is the price that the item sells for when the gavel comes down. Conditions of Sale This refers to the terms and conditions of the sale including any warranties, special instructions etc. Lots There are two meanings for lot at an auction. First, all items up for auction are assigned a number. This is referred to in the catalogue and described by the auctioneer as a lot. Second, a number of small items such as a collection of costume jewelry can be grouped together and sold as a lump sum. This, too, is referred to as a lot. Absentee Bid Bidders do not have to physically be in the auction house at the time of the auction to bid. Bids can be placed by phone, fax or online. Arrangements must be made before hand to place an absentee bid. 5. Read the Auction Catalogue Get the auction catalogue and read it thoroughly. It will list the lots in selling order. The catalogue may be a hard copy or available online. 6. Register For Auction To bid at an auction, you need to register before the auction begins. You give your name, address and phone number and may be required to make a deposit. In return, you receive a bidding number. This helps the auction house keep track of who won what item. 7. Stay Cool Once the Bidding Begins Before the bidding begins, decide want to bid on and what you want to pay for it. Stick to your plan. Ill say it again - stick with your plan. Dont get into a bidding war. You may be sorry if buyers remorse kicks in. 8. Know About Additional Costs Often auction houses charge a buyers premium. It is an additional surcharge that the auction house adds to the hammer price, taxes are calculated after these two are added. 9. After-Sale Bid If a lot doesnt sell, ask if the auction accepts after-sale bids (a reasonable offer that a bidder makes after the auction closes for an item that did not sell). Some auction houses allow it. 10. Find Out About Payment And Shipping Make sure you know before hand what forms of payment are accepted. If your purchase is big, have a plan for how youll get it home. Auction houses will hold on to your item while you arrange for moving it. But storage fees may be charge. 11. Attend Midweek Sales Midweek sales can be less crowded than weekend sales. Less competition may lead to better deals. 12. Attend A Variety of Auctions Dont discount an auction that is not geared to your area of interest. An office furniture auction will likely have computers, filing cabinets and basic office furniture but there may be the odd piece of antique furniture. Youll find this out at the preview. At this office furniture auction, most attendees will be seeking the computers and filing cabinets. There may not be as many attendees interested in the antique furniture. So, you may come away with a great deal. Martin Swinton owns Take-A-Boo Emporium, an antique shop located in Toronto, Canada. What! Not Another Celebrity Breakup!

By Jeff Herring Have you heard the earth shattering news? Have you heard that Jessica and Nick have broken up? Or as the press release stated, they have “parted ways.” It’s true. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey announced that they have decided to go their separate ways. Now, please forgive my cynicism here. It’s just that when stuff like this is treated like news, even surprising news, well, I think it is just silly. At the same time, I do not mean to make fun of their pain. Break ups hurt, and I wish them both a speedy recovery. Sustainable relationships These are two very attractive people. Physical attraction in a relationship is a wonderful thing. It’s just that it’s hard to sustain a long term relationship based on physical attraction alone. A sustainable relationship requires a good match between the requirements, needs and wants of two people. Requirements are what I call “gotta-haves.” The relationship will not work if a requirement is not met. There is no room for compromise. Ex: Having children is a good example of a requirement. It’s an either/or situation, because you cannot have half a child. Needs are almost as important as requirements in a relationship. The difference is needs can be negotiated. Needs need to be met, because each time a need is not met, an issue is created. At the same time, there is some flexibility in how the needs are met. Ex: If one person has a stronger need for alone time, this can be negotiated. When, where, and how often the need for alone time is met can be negotiated and compromised upon. Wants are the gravy in a relationship, the extra good stuff. Wants do not have to be there, it’s just a lot more fun if they are. Ex: For instance, I really like smooth jazz music. While it would be nice if the person I am with likes smooth jazz too, it’s not a have too or a deal breaker. Why You Should Consider Alternative Natural Medicines Instead Of Drugs

By Gregg Hall If you watch television, then I’m sure you have noticed all of the advertisements for various medications. These remedies span from depression and arthritis, to migraines and cholesterol reduction. They all give the impression that this is the best medication for whatever illness it was designed for, showing the happy people who take them. Then, they start listing the potential side effects, and some of them sound more dangerous than the illnesses themselves. Some of the doctors who prescribe these medications will often frown on taking an herbal alternative. To them, these natural medications are not really medicine and are a waste of time and money. While it’s true that not every herbal remedy is as effective as it may be reported to be, studies have shown that many of them are. What these doctors fail to realize is that many of the chemical prescriptions are the synthetic equivalents of the herbal medications. Millions of dollars are spent each year on the study of plants and ways to get the same results by use of chemicals. One of the reasons this is done is because typically, natural medications can not be patented, but the chemical ones can. This allows pharmaceutical companies to gain more profits by carrying products that the other companies are not allowed to reproduce. If you take a look at history, prior to chemical medications coming onto the market, herbal medications were given to treat illness. This is not to say that there haven’t been huge advancements in technology that allows for disease to be treated more effectively. Unfortunately, chemical prescriptions can be very hard on the body. Natural medications derived from herbs are usually tolerated much better. Natural medications also help to prevent diseases. One of the things that you often hear about is antioxidants. These are plant based compounds that fight all kinds of disease, such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and other devastating illnesses. While an orange is not necessarily considered a medication, it is so high in vitamin C and antioxidants, that even doctors recommend eating them. The old saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” has been proven to be true, because apples contain pectin, a fiber that the body needs to function properly. This is being pointed out because logically, if plant based products can prevent disease, then they should be more widely used to treat it. Recently, the medical field is giving more credence to natural medications. Many suggest using them for various diseases and all recommend that we include more fruits and vegetables in our diet. Before you start taking herbal medications, it’s important to research them and get all of the facts. Don’t stop taking any prescriptions without speaking to your doctor. Ask your physician about herbal medications that will complement your existing prescriptions or, if you can completely replace them with natural ones. Becoming Lean And Healthy Is Easy

By David Squire To become lean and healthy is easy, however it requires dedication and a conscious effort on our part. I’ll start with most important step in our battle against the bulge. Craving If we are to become lean and healthy, we have got to control are craving for sugar laden foods and white flour products. By replacing low quality refined carbohydrates with high quality complex carbohydrates contained in fresh fruit, vegetables, beans and brown rice, we can help stabilize our blood sugar level and control our craving for sugary snacks. Never skip meals or ignore your hunger. Doing this will slow down the metabolism and decrease the body’s ability to burn fat. Instead of snacking on potato chips or ice cream, grab an apple or a handful of berries or nuts. This one simple step will make a difference in how you look and feel. Fat We need a small amount of fat in our diet to remain healthy, but most of us consume far too much. In fact our bodies have no need for any saturated fat at all. Step two in our quest to become lean and healthy, is to cut back or eliminate the artery clogging fatty foods we love so much. We will need to cut fried foods, hot dogs and whole milk products out of our diet. Replace with fish and skinless chicken or turkey breast. Eat only lean beef. By simply checking labels we can eliminate a lot of the unnecessary fat in our diet. We will also need to be aware of what we drink. Water is essential to good health. Drink 8 glasses of water a day, switch to low calorie drinks and replace fruit juice with fresh fruit. Tips Write down everything you eat and drink this week. Find out what items you need to cut back on, and what items your not getting enough of. Be aware of the ingredients and the methods you use to cook your food. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables instead of canned or processed. In my next article I will talk about the importance of exercise, and introduce you to foods that will speed up the metabolism, enabling the body to burn fat at a high rate. The first step to becoming lean and healthy is easy. Eat more fruit, vegetables, Lean protein and drink 8 glasses of water a day, while decreasing refined carbohydrates and saturated fat. We will have more energy and give our bodies a chance to burn off stored fat. Your Wedding Invites Set The Tone

By Donald Saunders Your wedding will undoubtedly be one of the happiest days of your life and so it is no surprise that you will want to spare no effort in ensuring that every detail is meticulously planned and that your own individual style and personality is reflected in every aspect of the day, from your choice of dress and flowers to the topper on your wedding cake. Why is it then that so many couples fail to give the same degree of attention to their wedding invites? Your wedding invites are the one piece of correspondence between you and your guests that will set the tone for your special day and yet in many cases sending out the invitations is seen as one of those peripheral tasks to be slotted in when you have a free moment and to be completed as quickly as possible. To get your special day off to a perfect start take time and care over the choice and preparation of your wedding invites and stamp your own personality and style on your invitations is exactly the same way you do for every other aspect of your planning. This will start with your choice of invitation cards. Today invitation cards vary widely from the relatively plain and simple to sophisticated letterpress invitations on cotton paper or delicate and fragrant inlaid petal paper invitations, with or without an embossed foil border. Cards can also include simple embossing or hot foil stamping and include your names, monogram or insignia pressed into your wedding stationary to make it quite unique. The stationary and printing style that you select is however just the start of the process. The next thing to consider is whether or not you wish to include a picture(s) of yourselves on your wedding stationary. What better way can there be to make your invitations truly personal and unique than by including a picture of yourselves, either on the invitation card itself or on the accompanying envelope. Which brings us to the next item. Having taken care to select and personalize the invitation card itself, don’t forget to take the same care over selecting your envelope or envelopes. As your wedding invites will need to pass through the postal system it will be a good idea to think about using an outer “postal” envelope and an inner “decorative” envelope which might, for example, be decorated to follow the theme of your wedding including ribbons in the colors of your chosen decoration and perhaps dried of silk flowers. One further thing that you should think about at this point is whether or not you would like to have a personal website for your wedding and, if so, you should include details of the website on your wedding invites. A website can be a super addition to your wedding allowing you to include photographs and stories about you and your fianc, as well as providing the facility for your guests to reply to their invitation online and to see details of the wedding venue, including travel and accommodation details, gift registry information and a great deal more. As the first point of contact with your guests your wedding invites and an extremely important part of your wedding planning and taking time and care over the preparation of your invitations will help tremendously in smoothing the path to your wedding day. An 18th Birthday Party For The College Bound

By Audrey Okaneko One of the most memorable parties my daughter ever attended was an 18th birthday party her friends mom put together for him and his friends. All of the teens were thinking of college. It was May of their senior year. They all were graduating in just 4 weeks. They had all chosen and been accepted to the colleges of their choices. This mom, feeling very nostalgic, decided to create a childrens birthday party for these soon to be adults. She rented a bubble machine, a fog machine and a bouncer. The teens had a contest with paddle balls, a bubble gum blowing contest and hot dogs and hamburgers. Getting ready for college is both exciting and a bit scary for the senior in high school. This party allowed the teens a few hours of total childlike fun. As your own child begins to think of college, remember this is one of the biggest steps they will take. They are leaving the comfort of home, the comfort of mom and/or dad always being there. They are beginning a life away from home where they will now be responsible for what happens in their life. Consider how you can help your own teenager appreciate the past but look forward to the future with great anticipation. Audrey Okaneko is mom to two girls. The Emotion Of Price: How Numbers Affect Response

By Lisa Packer The actual numbers used in your pricing can have a huge effect on response. Throughout history, numbers have been invested with symbolism. And while the meanings may differ from culture to culture, the fact is this subconscious meaning will have an effect on your sales. Everyone already knows the “.99″ rule: an item priced at $9.99 will outsell a $10.00 item every time. Even though we all know about it, the price still seems lower. Some studies have even suggested that because this price has been used so often by discount stores and the like, people now associate .99 with a discount even if the price is higher than that found elsewhere. But other numbers can also have a dramatic effect on response. Research and testing seem to indicate that the most important digits are those on the right the end numbers. In other words, the digit(s) with which you end your price can dramatically increase or decrease sales. One number in particular can increase response by as much as 10 20%. Based on the above, you’d probably think that number was “9.” But it isn’t. In test after test, the number “7″ outperforms all others. $97 will out-pull $99 or $95. The reason seems to be the emotional symbolism 7 enjoys it’s the “lucky” number, “magic,” it’s even considered the number of divinity in Judeo Christian thinking. What 7 can do to boost sales, 3 can do to tank them. Offering something for $93 or even $29.33 is suicide. It just won’t work. Again, the reason is probably found in symbolism: “3″ is the number of completeness. Three strikes and you’re out. In design, a grouping of 3 items is visually satisfying. Which is probably why, a price ending in 3 just rubs us the wrong way. It’s too complete it feels like being overcharged. Nit picked. Gouged in some way. And that is not an emotion we want to feel. The Bottom Line: Test Until You Get It Right Of course, every product and every prospect is different. The only way to truly discover the perfect price for both you and your customers is to experiment. Keep tweaking until you reach that magic point, where profits are maximized and value is conveyed. Then both you and your customers will be satisfied. Does your marketing forge an emotional connection with your prospects? It can. Lisa Packer, author of “The Power Of Emotion: 6 Triggers That Turn Prospects Into Customers,” specializes in copy that does just that.
